Jason Burnett Artist Statement: My artwork is a desire: The desire to spark wonder and joy pulled straight from the crayon colors of children’s drawings and Saturday morning cartoons. The desire for the nostalgia of summer camp cheers and military school cadences. The desire from a drag queens’ curves wrapped around the circumference of a steaming cup of coffee. I believe that common utilitarian vessels can contain (barely, but close to bursting) such overwhelming desire. I imbue the everyday vernacular with such energy through explosive pattern, emotional narrative, bold lines and illustrative colors. These designs ignite the conscious and subconscious self through daily ritual and reflection. The ceramic objects (and rituals) I create redefine the narrative of desire so that it exists not only in bedrooms and boudoirs, but in the everyday touch of a cup to the lip.
About Jason Burnett's Workshop: Surface Decorating with Slips, Stencils and Transfers w/ Jason Bige Burnett
Working while the clay is leather hard can create vast opportunities to decorate prior to glazing -- and establishes exciting results! Technically speaking Jason Burnett will focus on embellishing pottery with colored slips, stamps, underglaze stains and other various processes -- specifically image transfer techniques! Burnett uses silkscreen printed transfers to create rich dynamic surfaces and patterns that reference subject matter between curious, cute and queer.
